The Cards and Promotion screen shows all activity occurring on promotional line-of-credit loans (payment method 5 with LNCARD set to "Y"). The Cards and Promotions screen holds most of the information needed for managing promotional line-of credit loans, such as showing different account balances and interest rates for each line-of-credit or promotion (also known as purchases).
Generally, this screen is only used to view information. However, if you have proper security, you can make changes to some of the fields on this screen, especially if reinstating promotional interest rates (see Reinstating a Promotion).
This information is very detailed and can be overwhelming, so we've broken up the information into the following key topics of most importance to revolving line-of credit:
Basics of Promotional Line-of-Credit
Billing Date and Calculating Finance Charges
Promotion Period Expiration Date
Note
If you try accessing this screen for a line-of-credit account (payment method 5), and the account is not flagged as a card loan (LNCARD = "Y"), the account cannot be viewed on this screen. The following error message will be displayed at the top of this screen:
"Invalid Payment Method for this Screen. Must be a Card Loan"
Use the Loans > Line-of-Credit Loans screen instead to view the line-of-credit account details. |

When this screen was originally developed, the intent was to issue cards to customers with a maximum credit limit for the purpose of purchasing items from a qualified dealer. The cards are different from a credit card, as only specific dealers allow these cards; not any store that has a debit/credit card reader. However, as of today, we no longer issue actual cards to customers for the purpose of purchasing items on line-of-credit. Instead, customers go to dealers or to one of your branches, who help them with approval for purchasing items on their line-of-credit account.
The approval amount on a line-of-credit loan allows customers to purchase additional items, as long as the price of the items do not exceed the maximum amount of credit. Each purchase remains on one card, or maybe better understood as one account. But the different purchases may have different interest rates, promotional expiration dates, principal/interest payments, etc. See Basics of Promotional Line-of-Credit for more information.
What to look for in History
The first time a borrower opens a line-of-credit card loan, History shows an Open New Loan transaction (tran code 680). When additional lines-of-credit are taken out for additional purchases, it shows in History as a G/L Debit with offsetting G/L Credit. G/L Debits and Credits are reflected with either tran codes 310, 410, 510, or 1810 (G/L Credit) or 300, 400, 500, and 1800 (G/L Debit).
You can view this history on the Loans > History screen, as shown below:
Or from the Loans > Marketing and Collections > Loan Disclosure History tab, as shown below:
Purchased Loans
If your institution purchased the card loans from a third party or another institution, you may not see an open transaction or G/L debits or credits. Instead, you may just see a Balancing Item (tran code 009), where it shows the Principal amount, as shown below:
Also see LOC Transactions for more information on different transactions specific to LOC card loans. |
As far as the actual Cards and Promotions screen, most users should have view-only access to this screen. Only administrators or supervisors should have file maintenance access to the fields on this screen. Generally, no one should be changing fields on this screen unless you read and understand this help and understand how the fields affect the loan.
The Cards and Promotions screen allows you to view detailed information concerning promotional line-of-credit loans (payment method 5 with LNCARD = "Y"). This screen also shows the details of individual promotions (also called purchases) and promotional expiration dates.
The following is an example of this screen:
If you have proper security, you can make changes to certain fields on this screen.
There are two groups of tabs on this screen. The top part of the screen shows information for the overall loan. It is comprised of the following tabs:
The lower half of the screen shows information for each promotion. It consists of the following tabs:
The top and bottom tab groups on this screen display independently of each other. Any top tab can be viewed with any bottom tab simultaneously. |
