Variable confidences work the same way fixed confidences do until Step 3 of the OFAC algorithm. Instead of dividing the number of codes found by the number of words available and comparing the result against a fixed percentage to determine if there is a hit, we specify how many codes must match for a given number of codes in the OFAC sample. For example, we could say that if there were two codes in the OFAC item, then both must be in the phrase, giving us a 100% confidence level; but if there were three codes in the OFAC item, then we only need to match two of them, giving us a 67% level. Doing it this way helps cut down on the number of false hits returned.
The default levels used are 2 of 2 (100%), 2 of 3 (67%), 3 of 4 (75%), 3 of 5 (60%), 4 of 6 (67%), 4 of 7 (57%), 5 of 8 (63%) and 5 of 9+ (–56%).
